박승주 작가의 한국 첫 개인전을 열며,

'큐레이티드 컬럼스에 자리한 일시적인 조각들'

작품의 형태에 먼저 매료되어 전시를 기획하게 되었고, 작품의 의도와 의미를 처음 마주하는 관람자의 시선으로 탐구하였습니다.

작품의 재료인 철은 견고하고 무거운 첫인상을 줍니다. 그러나 외부의 영향으로 조각이 쓰러지는 순간, 작품을 바라보는 관점은 달라집니다. 접합 없이 각 면이 서로 기대어 균형과 형태를 유지하고 있는 작품들은 안정감 속에 내재된 긴장감을 드러냅니다. 고요해 보이지만 실은 치열하게 균형을 이루고 있는 조각에서, 끊임없이 중심을 잡으려 애쓰는 우리의 모습이 겹쳐 보이기도 합니다.

박승주 작가는 종이 구조를 탐구하는 과정에서 우연히 균형이 성립되는 지점을 발견하였고, 이후 이를 금속으로 확장하였습니다. 이러한 작업 방식은 결과보다 의도하지 않은 순간에 형태를 발견하는 과정에 더 중점을 둡니다.
균형과 힘의 관계라는 단순한 개념을 담은 조각은 관람자마다 다르게 해석되며 보편적인 공감대를 형성합니다.

무겁고 위압적인 금속 조각의 일반적인 인상과 달리, 종이의 물성에서 비롯된 가볍고 유연한 감각을 유지하고 있습니다. 또한 열과 물질의 상호작용을 통해 형성된 표면에는 시간이 자연스럽게 축적되며 변화의 층위를 더합니다.

쓰러진 조각의 면들이 바닥 위에 우연히 배치된 모습 또한 하나의 완성된 조각이 됩니다. 완벽히 서 있는 순간과 무너진 상태, 그리고 다시 균형을 잡기 위해 집중하는 행위까지 이 모든 과정은 조각의 일부가 됩니다. 이는 불완전함마저 완벽함의 일부로 바라보는 큐레이티드 컬럼스의 개념과 맞닿아 있습니다.

디아 비컨 같은 갤러리를 동경하며 언젠가는 전시 공간을 만들고자 하는 바람을 품어왔는데, 작지만 의미 있는 첫 발걸음을 내딛게 해준 박승주 작가님께 깊은 감사를 전합니다.

'Ephemeral Sculptures at Curated Columns'

《Lean Forms》 emerged from an immediate attraction to the sculptures’ forms. Rather than beginning with predetermined interpretations, the work unfolds through close observation, allowing intention and meaning to surface gradually.

The sculptures are constructed from steel, a material associated with weight and permanence. Without joints, each plane leans against another, maintaining form through balance alone. Stability appears intact, yet tension remains embedded within the structure. When a sculpture falls under external force, its configuration shifts, revealing balance as a provisional state rather than a fixed condition.

The works originate from an earlier investigation of paper structures, where moments of balance emerged unintentionally. These principles were later translated into metal. The process prioritizes discovery over outcome, allowing form to arise through the relationship between force, weight, and support. Despite the density of the material, the sculptures retain a sense of lightness informed by the logic of paper.

Surfaces are shaped through heat and material transformation, where time accumulates as subtle variation rather than finish. When collapsed, the dispersed planes on the floor form an alternative composition. Standing, falling, and rebalancing are not separate moments but part of a continuous sculptural condition. In this way, Lean Forms considers instability not as failure, but as a fundamental component of form.
