양이잔(兩耳盞)은 조선시대에 제작된 백자 잔으로, 몸체 양쪽에 달린 두 개의 귀(손잡이)가 특징입니다. 주로 술잔이나 찻잔으로 사용되었으며, 손가락을 자연스럽게 받칠 수 있는 귀의 구조는, 내용물이 뜨거울 때에도 손을 보호하며 잔을 안정적으로 들어 올릴 수 있게 합니다.

조선 백자는 장식성을 줄이고 단정한 백색 유약을 사용해, 형태와 비례가 지닌 고유한 아름다움을 드러내는 도자기로 발전했습니다. 양이잔 역시 과장 없는 곡선과 담백한 백자의 형태를 통해 쓰임에 집중한 조선 백자의 특징을 보여줍니다.

Yangijan (Two-Handled Cup)

The yangijan (two-handled cup) is a form of white porcelain vessel produced during the Joseon Dynasty. Distinguished by two small handles placed symmetrically on either side of the body, it was used for serving alcoholic drinks or tea. The handles provide a secure grip while reducing direct contact with the vessel, an arrangement well suited to the use of warm liquids.

Joseon white porcelain is characterized by a restrained aesthetic, defined by minimal decoration and a refined white glaze. Emphasis is placed on proportion, balance, and clarity of form rather than surface ornament. The yangijan exemplifies these qualities through its understated silhouette and measured curves, reflecting the Joseon Dynasty’s pursuit of functional simplicity and quiet elegance.

Artist Lee Jeong-hyun draws upon close study of the Joseon white porcelain yangijan, preserving its historical proportions and formal restraint while subtly recalibrating thickness and weight for contemporary use. Rather than replicating the original, the work seeks continuity with the past through measured reinterpretation. In the stable form of the porcelain and the quiet gesture of lifting the cup, the sensibility of Joseon white ware unfolds naturally within the rhythms of modern life.
