당초무늬 암막새

덩굴이 유려하게 얽히고 뻗어 나가는 모습을 담은 당초문(唐草文)은 다복(多福)·다산(多産)·장수(長壽)를 기원하는 의미를 지닙니다. 암막새는 기와지붕의 처마 끝을 막아 빗물의 침투를 방지하고, 지붕의 단면을 단정하게 정리하는 역할을 합니다. 기능적인 구조 속에서도 섬세한 문양이 새겨져 있어, 건축의 마무리를 예술로 완성하는 장식으로도 사용되었습니다. 당초문이 새겨진 암막새는 주로 신라 시대의 사찰 건축을 위해 제작되었습니다. 역사의 깊이가 담긴 세월의 흔적으로 일부가 깨져있습니다.

Roof-End Tile with Arabesque Design (Silla Dynasty)

An end roof tile engraved with an arabesque pattern of flowing vines, symbolizing wishes for prosperity, fertility, and longevity. Used to seal the eaves of tiled roofs in temple architecture, it protected buildings from rain while completing the structure with decorative grace. Commonly crafted during the Silla period, its aged surface bears traces of time and history.
