창조에 대하여
창작자는 무언가를 새롭게 만드는 사람입니다. 그러나 창작의 과정에서 ‘새롭다’는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지, 하나의 결과물이 온전히 새로운 것이라고 말할 수 있는지에 대한 질문은 반복적으로 생겨납니다. 크리에이터라는 이름이 널리 통용되는 지금, 이 글은 이진우 작가와 나눈 대화 속 사유를 바탕으로 큐레이티드 컬럼스가 생각하는 창조의 의미를 들여다보고자 합니다.
창조에 대해서는 독일어 schöpfen에서 하나의 단서를 얻었습니다. 이 단어는 ‘퍼올리다’, ‘긷다’, ‘끌어내다’라는 의미를 가지며, ‘창조’를 뜻하는 Schöpfung, ‘창조자’를 의미하는 Schöpfer와도 연결됩니다. 창조는 완전히 없던 것을 만들어내는 행위라기보다, 이미 존재하는 것 안에서 무언가를 끌어올리는 과정으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
창조는 무에서 유를 만드는 일로만 설명되지 않습니다. 오히려 이미 있는 것을 오래 바라보며 존재 안으로 깊이 들어가고, 그 안에 잠재된 형태와 의미를 발견하는 일에서 창조는 시작됩니다.
새로움에 대해서는 한자 ‘新’에서 또 다른 관점을 찾을 수 있었습니다. ‘새로울 신(新)’은 설 립(立), 나무 목(木), 도끼 근(斤)으로 구성되며, 기존의 것을 끊어낸 이후에 드러나는 상태를 의미합니다. 이 관점에서도 작업은 완전히 무에서 출발하지 않습니다. 모든 작업은 이미 존재하던 것들 위에서 이루어지며, 무엇을 취했는가보다 무엇을 남기고 무엇을 끊어냈는가가 결과를 형성합니다.
새로움은 이미 있는 것 위에 무언가를 더하는 일만으로 만들어지지 않습니다. 오히려 기존의 것을 다시 바라보고, 그 안에 잠재된 가능성을 이전과 다른 상태로 드러내는 과정에 가깝습니다. 새로운 것을 만든다는 일은 기존의 것과 완전히 단절되는 일이 아니라, 이미 존재하던 것들 안에서 무엇을 더 깊이 바라보았는가에 따라 형성됩니다.
큐레이티드 컬럼스도 이와 같은 태도를 중요하게 생각합니다. 과거의 형식을 단순히 반복하거나 재현하는 것이 아니라, 오늘의 감각 안에서 다시 바라보고자 합니다. 창조는 과거를 면밀히 연구하는 일에서 시작됩니다. 이미 존재해온 것들에 대한 충분한 이해가 있을 때, 그것은 단순한 재현을 넘어 현재의 맥락 속에서 다시 드러날 수 있습니다. 창조란 완전히 새로운 것을 발명하는 일이 아니라, 이미 존재해온 것들 속에 잠재되어 있던 가능성을 다시 드러내는 일입니다.
On Creating
— Drawn from a Conversation with Artist Jinwoo Lee
A creator is someone who brings something new into being. Yet in the act of making, the meaning of “new” often becomes uncertain, as does the idea that any work can ever be called entirely new. While the word “creator” has become part of everyday language, the act of creating still resists a simple definition. Following a conversation with artist Jinwoo Lee, these pages gather Curated Columns’ own reflections on what it means to create.
The German word schöpfen offers a meaningful way to approach this. It means to draw up, scoop, or bring forth, and is connected to Schöpfung (creation) and Schöpfer (creator). In this sense, creating is not about making something out of nothing. It is closer to drawing something out from what already exists. To create is not only to bring something into being from emptiness. More often, it begins with looking closely at what is already there, entering deeply into its presence, and discovering the forms and meanings quietly held within it.
The Chinese character 新, meaning “new,” offers another way to think about newness. It can be read through its elements: 立 (to stand), 木 (tree), and 斤 (axe). It suggests a state that appears after something existing has been cut away. From this perspective, a work does not begin from absolute emptiness. Every work is built upon what has already existed, and its final shape is determined not only by what is added, but also by what is removed and left behind.
Newness is not made simply by adding to what already exists. It emerges through looking again, allowing the latent possibilities within things to appear in another state. To make something new is not to separate oneself completely from what came before, but to reveal what is seen more deeply within it.

Creating begins with a careful study of what has come before. When there is a deep understanding of what has already existed, a work can move beyond mere reproduction and reappear within the context of now.
